About the atelier
Nähwerk Alter grew from a preference for quiet, precise sewing over rush-hour alterations counters. The room on Dundas Street is small on purpose.
We opened in 2014 to give Edinburgh neighbours a place where hems are measured with the shoes you will wear, and where a jacket’s lining is opened carefully rather than forced. The name nods to workshop craft — sewing as workmanship, not spectacle.
How a visit usually goes
You bring the garment (and shoes for length work). We pin, talk through options, and agree a collection window. Complex or bridal pieces are booked so the bench stays calm. We will say honestly when a fabric or construction cannot support the change you hope for.
What we care about
- Keeping the maker’s original logic when we alter.
- Clear pricing before work starts — no surprise add-ons mid-job.
- Repairing first when mending extends the life of a favourite piece.
